In the 1960s, many young Europeans arrived on the Colombian Caribbean coast, full of a sense of adventure and the desire to fulfill the American dream. Among them was a 17-year-old Italian from a town called Maratea, located about three hours south of Naples. Like many immigrants, the young man traveled inland with some trade items he had brought from Italy, including several hats.

He was particularly fascinated by the land of Boyaca, perhaps because of the memories the mountains of this region evoked in him. He settled in Guateque, where he was able to establish himself and open his first hat shop.

After a few years, he moved to Bogotá to the street that is now popularly known as the traditional “Calle de los Sombreros” (Street of Hats). This young man’s hat shop still exists on the same street today, and it is precisely from here that our felt hats come, handcrafted with tradition and love.

The Alley of Hats or Hatmakers’ Alley is a small street in the center of Bogotá that has continued to evolve over time, as have its shops, including some of the oldest traditional hat shops in Colombia. However, this street served not only for the sale of hats or other headwear but also for the establishment and development of the history of an entire industry.

And just as the Alley of Hats is more than just a street, the hat has long been more than a simple decorative accessory. For many years, a hat has been one of the best elements to create a refined and iconic look that provides prestige, elegance, and even power in terms of clothing, thus going far beyond its pure functionality of protection.

Politicians, actors, cabaret performers, dancers, and many other stars position this piece as a must-have and a wardrobe classic that one should always have and dare to wear. Check out our range of handmade felt hats that come directly from the traditional street of hat shops in Bogotá in our virtual store, and remember, when you step out of your comfort zone, you strengthen your self-confidence and self-assurance.
